Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has asserted that the government is committed to upholding press freedom, denying any interference in media operations. His remarks came during a programme celebrating the silver jubilee of Yugaahwan National Daily.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Gurung addressed concerns about the Social Media Regulation Bill, suggesting that some sectors of society have misinterpreted its intentions. He remarked that anarchy and disorder have risen under the guise of press freedom and emphasized the government’s efforts to manage these issues effectively.
Minister Gurung highlighted the necessity of regulating media activities to preserve social and racial harmony. He informed that the government is preparing to introduce a Mass Communication Bill and assured that the Social Media Regulation Bill would soon be enacted to address these challenges.
The Minister also pointed out the rise in cybercrime, noting that over 40,000 cases have been registered. He cautioned against using social media and freedom of expression as tools for spreading misinformation and illusions within society.
