Nepal’s Emergence as South Asia’s IT Hub Highlighted by Communications Minister


Kathmandu: Nepal is being positioned as an emerging ‘Silicon Valley’ in South Asia, according to Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung. Speaking at the Japan-Nepal IT Forum, 2025 in Kathmandu, Minister Gurung emphasized Nepal’s potential as an IT hub and encouraged Japanese IT industries to establish operations in the country.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Gurung expressed Nepal’s readiness to embrace Japanese innovation, investment, and technology. He invited Japanese investors, researchers, and technology entrepreneurs to be part of Nepal’s digital transformation, assuring them of regulatory clarity, policy facilitation, and comprehensive institutional support.



Minister Gurung highlighted the forum’s significance in uniting scientists, policymakers, technical experts, and business leaders from both countries. He expressed optimism about establishing a Nepal-Japan IT corridor through the forum, seeing it as the beginning of a long-term strategic collaboration.



Furthermore, Minister Gurung reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to welcome Japanese investment in various IT sectors, including computing centers and software outsourcing. He mentioned plans to create an investment-friendly environment through a one-stop service system, infrastructure development, and policy and tax exemptions.



Minister Gurung disclosed proposals made to the Japanese government for partnerships in establishing a green energy-powered data center and launching Nepal’s satellite to enhance rural connectivity. He also emphasized collaboration in cyber security, fiber optic expansion, telecom reform, and 5G technology.



Additionally, HoR Member Dr. Swarnim Wagle recommended initiating substantial business ventures between Nepal and Japan through mega companies, citing a solid foundation for business expansion between the two nations.
