Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized that safeguarding mountains is integral to the protection of the earth, seas, and human civilization. He noted that the government initiated the Sagarmatha Sambaad, a multi-stakeholder dialogue, with this understanding in mind.
According to National News Agency Nepal, during the Opening Session of the Sagarmatha Sambaad held from May 16-18, Prime Minister Oli explained that the event is named after Sagarmatha, the world’s tallest peak. It is designed to foster a platform for genuine dialogues and shared learning on climate change issues, seeking collective solutions to these challenges.
Prime Minister Oli expressed hope that the dialogue would lead to significant agreements on building a prosperous future characterized by ethical integrity and intellectual bravery. He pointed out that while Nepal has contributed minimally to global carbon emissions, which drive climate change and global warming, the country is still experiencing severe impacts. He described how landslides are destroying homes and the unusual patterns of floods and droughts are causing significant problems, necessitating continuous efforts to combat these issues.
