Chittagong: Power, energy, and mineral resources advisor Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan has expressed concerns over the stagnant development of Sandwip, an isolated island that remains underdeveloped even after 54 years of independence. During his visit to inspect development activities at the Banshbaria Guptachara ferry terminal in Sitakunda, he highlighted the severe hardships faced by the residents of Sandwip, likening their travel difficulties to punishment for a serious crime.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the advisor, who hails from Sandwip himself, empathized with the local populace’s struggles but emphasized the need for development over mere hardship alleviation. He pointed out that while major cities like Dhaka have seen significant growth, Sandwip has been largely overlooked in terms of development projects.
The advisor revealed that the chief advisor of the interim government has directed relevant authorities to prioritize areas that have not met development expectations. He illustrated the challenging journey to Sandwip, where travelers must wade through waist-deep water to board boats, often struggling with their luggage amidst mismanagement at the terminal.
Efforts are underway to address these issues, with plans to complete road connections on both sides of the ferry by the upcoming March. The advisor’s visit was attended by Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam, Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer KM Rafiqul Islam, and senior officials from BIWTA, indicating a concerted effort to bring about the much-needed development in Sandwip.
