Dhaka: The new Charge d’affaires of the US embassy in Dhaka, Tracey Ann Jacobson, today reiterated her country’s support for the Interim Government of Bangladesh on various issues, including development and counter-terrorism. “We are prepared as a nation to support your government on a variety of issues,” Jacobson told Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during a meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser spoke about ongoing reform initiatives in Bangladesh, efforts to build political consensus on the July proclamation, and plans for the next general election. Prof Yunus expressed optimism about political parties reaching a consensus by early February, noting no dissenting voices have been heard. He emphasized the government’s role as a facilitator, stating, “My job is building a consensus. I am not pushing any idea.”
Prof Yunus mentioned that once political parties agree on reform proposals, the government would request them to sign the July Charter. He acknowledged the challenge due to varying opinions, but is hopeful the process will result in a stable political foundation.
During their meeting, Jacobson raised concerns about the arrest of journalists and reports of violence against religious minorities. Prof Yunus assured her of his government’s commitment to ensuring justice for all citizens. They also discussed Bangladesh’s relations with its neighbors, progress on the Rohingya crisis, and Myanmar’s security situation.
Prof Yunus highlighted Bangladesh’s role in initiating SAARC and his recent efforts to revitalize it into a platform similar to the European Union. He expressed gratitude for US humanitarian assistance to Rohingya refugees and sought further support for their repatriation and the creation of a safe zone in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
Additionally, Prof Yunus noted Bangladesh’s status as a top importer of US cotton and encouraged increased US imports of Bangladeshi apparel and textiles, which would boost US cotton exports. Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary to SDG affairs, was also present at the meeting.
