Women Empowerment Helps Reduce Violence Against Women: Deputy Speaker Ranamagar

Kathmandu: Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Indira Ranamagar, has emphasized that empowering women plays a crucial role in reducing violence against women and girls. She highlighted the importance of instilling equality and respect among women and men from an early age as a foundation for building a just and equal society.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Deputy Speaker Ranamagar made these remarks during the inauguration of the annual program, the 16 Day Activism against Violence against Women (VAW), organized by the National Women Commission. She stressed that mutual respect is essential in mitigating VAW and called for increased public awareness to address violence in the digital realm.

Ranamagar further elaborated, stating, “Only discussions on VAW are insufficient; empowerment must accompany these discussions to effectively minimize VAW in practice. Campaigns alone do not suffice; unity among women is crucial. Empowerment, the development of women-friendly infrastructure, and women’s representation in decision-making positions are effective strategies.”

Superintendent of Police, Basundhara Khadka, noted that courage, solidarity, and collective efforts are vital in addressing VAW. She acknowledged the inadequacy of police efforts, citing a sharp rise in VAW cases, particularly on social networking sites, and emphasized the need for a new approach to tackle this issue.

In the fiscal year 2081/2082 BS, Nepal Police received 18,926 VAW complaints, as reported by Khadka.

Psychiatrist Dr. Basudev Karki highlighted the necessity of creating a sanitized and rational digital space to mitigate social and mental harm exacerbated by online platforms.

Cyber expert Abhijit Gupta suggested that digital literacy is a key measure for reducing VAW in cyberspace.

Monika Niraula, a campaigner with the Gen Z movement alliance, pointed out that technology has both positive and negative aspects, affecting not only women but also individuals with diverse identities beyond the male and female binary.

The International 16 Day Activism against VAW, launched today, will continue until December 10.
