Kathmandu: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Top Bahadur Magar, has highlighted the minimal implementation of the NHRC’s recommendations by the government, which he asserts is contributing to the promotion of impunity. This statement was made during a program organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the NHRC.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Chairperson Magar expressed concern over the inadequate seriousness displayed by the government regarding the implementation of NHRC recommendations. He emphasized that the lack of action not only undermines the authority of the NHRC but also perpetuates a culture where human rights violations can occur without consequence. Magar underscored that the right to freedom of expression is fundamental and should be exercised peacefully, reflecting the indispensable nature of this right in the human rights framework.
Magar further highlighted the ongoing concern regarding justice and repatriation for survivors of human rights violations during the armed conflict. He called upon State bodies to efficiently fulfill their responsibilities to address these issues, underscoring the importance of achieving justice for victims.
In the current fiscal year, the NHRC has received 58 complaints related to human rights violations, indicating ongoing challenges in the protection and promotion of human rights. The NHRC marked its anniversary with the slogan “The rights to life, dignity, equality and freedom: Base for durable peace and prosperity,” reflecting its continued commitment to these principles.
