Bangladesh and Korea Forge Partnership to Enhance Railway Operations

Dhaka: The government of Bangladesh and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea today signed agreements aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of Bangladesh Railways. The collaboration involves consultancy services, the provision of essential equipment, and the delivery of training programs.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the agreements-referred to as the Record of Discussion (RoD) and Terms of Reference (ToR)-are part of the “Improvement Project of Rolling Stock Management and Maintenance in Bangladesh.” The project will be carried out by Bangladesh Railway, which operates under the Ministry of Railways. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of Korea will contribute $3.69 million (approximately Taka 44.30 crore) in grant funding for the project.

These initiatives are designed to ensure the sustainable maintenance of locomotives previously procured by Bangladesh Railway through the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of Korea Eximbank. The Economic Relations Division (ERD) highlighted these objectives in a press release.

Representing the Government of Bangladesh, Miranda Mahrukh, Additional Secretary and Wing Chief (Asia, JEC, and F and F) of the ERD, signed the deals alongside Nam, Young-woo, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Affairs at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korea.
